About The Lobby Lurker

lobbylurker.com · Sacramento region theatre coverage

What this is

The Lobby Lurker is a community-wide, editorially independent theatre website for the Sacramento region. It lists and reviews all local theatre — amateur, semi-professional, university, fringe, and professional — regardless of company profile or prior relationship with this site.

No theatre company has editorial control over what is listed, reviewed, or published here. A listing is not a guarantee of a review; equally, no company can be excluded for reasons other than the criteria set out in our coverage policy.

Geographic coverage

The site covers productions taking place within:

  • Sacramento County
  • Yolo County (West Sacramento, Davis, Woodland)
  • Placer County
  • Western Nevada County (Nevada City, Grass Valley)
  • Western El Dorado County (Placerville, El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park)
  • Amador County (Jackson)

Touring productions based outside the region are eligible for calendar listing if they perform within it. They are listed but not reviewed — coverage is reserved for companies rooted in the regional theatre community.

What we cover

A production qualifies for a calendar listing if it takes place in a publicly accessible venue within the region, is open to the paying or ticketed public, is a theatrical performance (drama, comedy, musical theatre, opera, physical theatre, immersive, or similar live form), and has at least one confirmed performance date at the time of listing.

Youth and school productions (under-18 casts in school or youth group context) are not covered at this time. This is an editorial resource decision, not a value judgement on the work.

Reviews

A listing is not a guarantee of a review. The calendar aims to be comprehensive; the reviews section is selective. A production may be listed with no review published, and this carries no editorial meaning.

Reviewing the full range of the regional theatre community is an editorial priority. Every active local company — amateur, semi-professional, university, fringe, and professional — should expect to be reviewed at least once per season. No tier of company is treated as more review-worthy than another by default.

This site publishes honest criticism. Negative assessments will appear in print when the work warrants them. Reviewers are expected to approach every production with genuine generosity of attention and to direct criticism at the work, not at individuals.

Our reviewers

Reviews are written by named contributors across three categories: staff reviewers with an ongoing editorial relationship with the site; freelance or commissioned critics engaged for specific productions; and community contributors — vetted members of the public who apply to join the reviewing team.

Every review, regardless of the contributor's experience level, is edited before publication. Editing is primarily for clarity, tone, and adherence to the style guide — not to alter the reviewer's critical opinion.

Hosted reviews

Reviews written by external critics and published elsewhere may be hosted on this site with documented permission from the original author or publication. Hosted reviews are clearly attributed and distinguished from in-house content with a visible label and a direct link to the original source.

Requesting coverage

Theatre companies and venues may request coverage. Requests are welcomed and taken into account when planning the review schedule, but do not guarantee a review will be commissioned. The editorial decision — including which reviewer is assigned and what they write — is made entirely independently.

Where possible, review requests should be made at least two weeks before opening night. Companies requesting a review are expected to provide two complimentary tickets, preferably on or near opening night.
